Managing Housekeeping Operations Is Not the Same as Doing Housekeeping
CHHE preparation should center on the management functions applied to a housekeeping department — planning, organizing, staffing, and controlling — rather than on memorizing task procedures alone.
Start every study block by asking which management function a topic serves. Forecasting occupancy and setting deep-clean cycles is planning; par stocks and department structure are organizing; productivity standards and schedules are staffing; inspections and variance analysis are controlling. When you can file each concept under a function, you can also predict what kind of paper scenario it generates: a number to calculate, a structure to design, or a system to evaluate.
The trap is familiarity. If you have stripped thousands of rooms, procedure questions feel easy and management questions feel vague. Worked example: a 120-room hotel holds par 3 bed linen, meaning one set on the beds, one cycling through laundry, and one set on shelves as backup; minimum stock is therefore about three sets per bed position. Now a one-time banquet needs 200 additional tablecloths. The plausible mistake is buying 200. The better decision weighs rental for the event against purchase, because owned banquet linen adds storage burden, carrying cost, and a replacement cycle for a need that will not recur. This is also a capital-versus-operating distinction: a rental fee is an operating cost, while a linen fleet purchase is inventory the department must then track and rotate.
Tie the scenario back to inventory control concepts: physical counts, usage tracking against issues from stores, and the separation between inventory in use and inventory on hand.
